Why do we all speak different languages? Surly where you live geographically has no baring on what dialect you speak.

And since most Atheists believe Darwin's theory that we evolved from a mitochondrial eve, why don't we all speak her language?

I've heard the religious side of the story many times. I'm now interested in the other side.

ummm, different areas grow and prosper, creating the dialect that they use, they then meet others and wither take or give thier language on. simple.

This is a really stupid question. Language evolves just like animals, branching off from the original. Or it can reform spontaneously, if lost.

Different people adopted vocalizations and writings that suited them. The human race isn't uniform throughout.

So one day, because I live in China, I decided to create my own language, and from there another language came to be?

What a dull un-thought out answer.

The religious version is more fun

Mitochondrial eve is the first 'homo sapien sapien'. According to Darwin, she is where the human race came from.

She was not the first human, she is our most recent matrilineal common ancestor. And Darwin died long before the concept was formed.

edit: As for the question in the OP, even if there was, at one point, a common language in the "ancestry" of all modern languages, it is hardly a mystery as to how it diverged. You need only look at a Shakespearian play to see how fast language can change even in a steady environment. Expand the time parameters by a few thousand years and add in migration / isolation, and you get multiple distinct languages.

Let me ask this. If your immigrant grandmother speaks German, do you automatically speak German as well, even though you live in the United States around millions of people who speak English?

By your theory, the answer should be "yes," because your theory implies that knowledge of a language is somehow related to genetics. As if there's something like a "language gene" that determines a person's language or dialect.

That's not how evolution works.

That's also not how language works.
